WHY ARE THERE ONLY ASIAN MODELS WITH SLANTED EYES AND HIGH CHEEKBONE?
The Asian appearances likened by the West. For years, many high-end fashion brands have only selected Asian models with slanted eyes and high cheekbones for theie runways and editorials, and this trend has been largely criticized by Asian people that this is only a stereotype perpetutated by Orientalism.
Why is it a problem? You might be wondering: Why can's brands use Asian models with these features? However, it is not the feature itself that causes the problem, but rather its effect on perpetuating stereotypes and its symbolic power. For example, the "foxy eyes" makeup has been deemed popular in recent years, however, the style is considered racist and appropriating towards the Asian communicaties who has been discriminated against for having the similar eye styles fro many years
What's the solution? Clearly, it is not the models' fault to have slanted eyes and high cheekbones. Asian models with these particular features should also be celebrated. Meanwhile, it is important for the fashion industry to create a more diversified and inclusive environment where there's not a one and only type of Asian appearance. We need a space where Asian people don's have to look the same as the West assumed of us since many many decades ago.
